Was the threat of communist control, of which the Republic was accused, so serious, so real, that armed rebellion was justified? Heating our discussions were reports coming out of Europe of the action by the fascists against Jews and Catholics. In Germany, Jews were forbidden to use swimming pools and beaches. Catholics were arrested when they didn't incorporate pro-Nazi words into the celebration of the Mass. The Nuremberg Laws of 1935 had stripped the Jews of their citizenship. The reactionary nature of both Hitler and Mussolini became something we talked and argued about.
These reasons were there, and much more. There were so many factors that, as I think back to more than a half century ago, the best that I can do is to tell a little about the world in which I lived, about who I was, and about my dreams. The year was 1937, the middle of the Great Depression. Poverty, fear, unemployment, and demoralization were widespread: The lines of the unemployed seemed endless; wages were falling for those who continued to work; every day more businesses went bankrupt; factories were being abandoned; there were a stream of families spreading out from the failed farms of the Midwest Dust Bowl to other states, usually heading west to California.
The desperate circumstances that pushed them into action and the early victories formed the background against which there was a growing feeling of strength, a feeling that workers could organize, demonstrate, strikethat they could succeed in making their lives better. Farmers, particularly those in the Midwest, often banded together at farm foreclosure auctions to forcibly block the federal marshals. One of a group of neighbors would bid one dollar to buy back a neighbor's foreclosed lands and homes.
